Chapter 676: Experimental Center
Chapter 676: Experimental Center
"We might be able to fix the root cause of the informationization, that way you can survive."The researcher tried to comfort Evans.
"Don't worry about me, I'm fine."
The Experimental Center was a complex area made up of many large laboratories. Evans pressed himself against the wall on one side of the corridor, moving forward slowly.
The corridor was brightly lit, but the interiors of those laboratories had varying levels of brightness. Some were just as brightly lit as the corridor, some were dim, and a few were pitch black—so dark that even the corridor's light couldn't penetrate the thick shadows inside.
"The lighting inside the labs is different here. Is it the same on your end?"
Evans reluctantly carved a message into the wall.
"Yes. We can compare notes and see if there are any differences."
The researcher was still thinking about how to quickly describe the lighting conditions of those labs, but Evans had already sketched a rough map of the area on the wall, marking the brightness levels of each lab with symbols.
"No, we're seeing different things. The terrain structure on your end is more complex than mine, and the lab brightness doesn't match either."
The researcher also drew the terrain structure she saw on the wall. There were many differences between the two.
"Let's split up and do a lap. Afterward, we'll come back and draw the complete maps we saw. Can you remember it? Better not make mistakes."
Evans felt he needed to understand this information discrepancy.
"No problem. Are you okay on your own?"
The researcher was a bit worried about Evans's condition.
"I'm fine."
Evans supported himself against the wall as he moved through the corridor. The Experimental Center wasn't very large, just structurally complex.
It only took him fifteen minutes to figure out the layout and record the brightness of each lab.
When he returned to the spot where he had drawn the map earlier, Evans quickly filled in the rest of the Experimental Center's layout. By the time he finished the map, the researcher still hadn't come back.
Evans leaned against the wall and sat down. He didn't think the researcher would be this much slower than him, which meant she had probably run into some kind of trouble.
'Sigh... what a hassle.'
The decorative objects hanging on the walls gradually began to twist and deform. They detached from the walls and surrounded Evans.
Evans didn't wait for them to get close. He threw the rebar at the nearest decoration.
Even though his vision was blurry, the rebar struck the approaching decoration with perfect accuracy. The decoration quickly vanished.
Evans didn't bother trying to retrieve the rebar, because he could no longer stand up.
Besides, that rebar was too heavy for him.
A swarm of decorations pounced on him. They tore apart his prison garb and tried to devour his flesh.
With his only remaining left hand, Evans swung the mirror shard, attacking the decorations crawling all over him.
These decorations didn't dodge at all. They greedily gnawed at his flesh, making spine-chilling sounds.
In less than five seconds, Evans stabbed to death all the decorations on him. These decorations were extremely fragile, with no need to aim for vital spots.
"Cough... cough..."
Evans leaned against the wall, clutching the wounds on his stomach. Even though he had shielded his chest by placing his right arm in front of it before those things got close, the creatures had still bitten several deep wounds into his abdomen.
"...There's no way out of this one."
The corridor of the Experimental Center was filled with these decorations. In the distance, more had already jumped down from the walls and were approaching.
Evans wanted to leave one final message for the researcher, but he noticed that the map she had drawn earlier was slowly being completed.
The map was being filled in at a very slow pace, which meant her condition probably wasn't good either.
Evans silently committed the information on the wall to memory. Maybe he could use it in the next simulation.
A group of decorations with sharp limbs and mouths surrounded them. Evans turned his head to look at the decorations. He curled up, placing the left hand gripping the mirror shard on his knee.
"Come on, it's an all-you-can-eat buffet. Let's see if you can actually devour me."

[Remaining Simulation Attempts: 8]
"Why does it feel even worse than last time..."
Evans sat on the bed in his prison cell, the sensation of being gnawed on still lingering on his body.
Before he died, he had almost killed all those decorations.
But he had also been chewed beyond recognition, eventually losing consciousness completely.
However, right before losing consciousness, he had memorized the map the researcher had completed.
But her condition at the time probably wasn't much better than Evans's, so the accuracy of the map was unknown.
Thump!
Hearing the familiar crashing sound from the corridor, Evans grabbed the mirror shard and stepped out of his cell. He repeated his previous actions, finding the researcher in the cell near the metal door.
This time, he didn't drag her and run. Instead, he killed the owner of those footsteps right there in the cell.
He didn't change his fighting method either, still using Heavy Strike to attack the creature's eyes, letting its blood flow into the wound on his right hand.
He could have used his sleeve to prevent that, but considering the maze corridor, he decided to integrate that informationized blood instead.
Although he didn't plan to go that way this time and intended to take a different route, the other path might have similar terrain.
Carrying the rebar, Evans led the researcher smoothly to the other side of the metal door. He swiped the access card, opening it. Behind the door was another corridor.
As they passed through the metal door, some memories resurfaced, but they were all from the past and unrelated to this place.
"I don't think I'm Evans. I'm someone else, but I can't remember my name."
Evans hesitantly carved a message into the wall.
"Uh... I think I'm that Dr. Caroline."
Caroline finally remembered her identity and the reason she had come here.
"I feel like I have some impression of you... Did you use me for experiments?"
Evans vaguely remembered the name Caroline, but he didn't know their relationship.
"...Let's hurry up and get your wounds treated."
Caroline had no memory of anything related to Evans at all.
"Alright."
The two moved quickly down the corridor. There was no strange maze here—just the usual areas you'd expect in a research facility.
Since the architectural layout was perfectly normal, Evans quickly found the medical room.
The medical room was stocked with all kinds of basic supplies. Evans skillfully treated his wounds, as if he were very accustomed to this kind of operation.
