Chapter 491 Losing the ability to resist
Chapter 491 Losing the ability to resist
He turned and glanced around. Darkness enveloped the surroundings, only the occasional rustle of the wind made him feel somewhat oppressive. The air was filled with a lingering smell of decay, as if some force on the verge of collapse was quietly brewing. Every second of waiting seemed to lengthen the duration.
He turned to look at Zheng Yaoxian and found that the man's eyes had slightly opened. Although his expression was still grim, his gaze had become exceptionally sharp. Zheng Yaoxian seemed to have heard some of his movements and finally whispered, "You don't have to be so nervous."
"Nervous?" Su Ming paused, his voice low and resigned. "You're still nervous?" He knew his current emotion was no longer simply anxiety, but an inexplicable heartache. Heartache for the man who had never shown weakness, never relaxed, heartache for the pain and pressure he silently endured behind the scenes.
Zheng Yaoxian smiled faintly, a smile that was a little weak, but the determination in his eyes did not weaken in the slightest: "What do you want to do? You still want to persuade me to give up?"
"Give up?" Su Ming took a deep breath and looked off into the distance, his gaze becoming hazy. "If you give up now, neither of us will survive." He spoke without emotion, as if he were speaking of something simple, but deep down, his heart was filled with a thousand twists and turns. If Zheng Yaoxian continued like this, not only would he, but he himself would also be plunged into endless darkness.
Zheng Yaoxian looked at him quietly, his gaze penetrating all disguises and facades, reaching the deepest depths of his heart. He said nothing more, only a slight nod, as if everything had already been decided. Su Ming knew that Zheng Yaoxian had made his choice—he wouldn't give up easily, and neither would Su Ming.
The two of them seemed bound together by an invisible force, unshaken by life or death, or even fate. At this moment, what they awaited wasn't just five minutes of support, but a response to the deep, unspoken trust between them.
"Don't worry." Su Ming whispered. Although his voice was soft, every word was filled with determination. "I won't let you die here."
Zheng Yaoxian closed his eyes slightly, seemingly refusing to respond to Su Ming's words. He leaned against the wall in silence, recovering his strength. Even though he was extremely weak, as if all his strength had been drained, his gaze remained unchanged, his composure and calmness intact.
Su Ming's heartbeat quietly quickened in the darkness. The five minutes of waiting had passed, and the surroundings remained silent. Only the faint chill in the air reminded him of the passage of time. Zheng Yaoxian remained silent for a while, but his slightly closed eyes seemed to reveal an indescribable heaviness. It was as if he was trapped in a deep sense of helplessness, silently telling Su Ming that he could no longer hold on.
However, Su Ming knew that all this was not enough - he had to find a way to break through the dead silence before him. He had to stay awake, find a way to survive, and take Zheng Yaoxian with him.
"Lin Hao hasn't arrived yet?" Su Ming muttered to himself, his gaze fixed on Zheng Yaoxian's face, his heart growing increasingly agitated. He had originally been reluctant to reveal his emotions, but at this moment, he was finding it difficult to control them. Although he had been suppressing his uneasiness, this anxiety still nearly made him lose his mind.
"Is it really like this...?" He bit his lower lip unconsciously and murmured softly.
At this moment, the communicator vibrated slightly again. Su Ming almost subconsciously pressed the answer button, his voice already filled with urgency: "Any news?"
"It's me." Lin Hao's voice came from the other end of the communicator, with a deep sense of comfort, "We have confirmed his whereabouts. Your operation can begin now."
Su Ming's heart suddenly sank, but then he noticed something unusual in Lin Hao's tone. "Whereabouts?" he repeated, trying to get more information from it. "What do you mean?"
"I found some intelligence." Lin Hao said briefly without beating around the bush. "Turn on your communicator. I'll send you a newspaper with the information you need."
"Newspaper?" Su Ming was stunned for a moment, then glanced at Zheng Yaoxian. After confirming he was still silent, he nodded and pressed the corresponding button on his communicator. The screen instantly lit up, the light glaring, but he paid it no mind, his eyes fixed on the text appearing on the screen. Slowly, his gaze focused on a headline in the newspaper: "Key Figure Arrested, Critically Injured."
At that moment, Su Ming practically held his breath. The newspaper's text was concise and clear, without any unnecessary embellishment, yet between the lines, a kind of heart-wrenching shock was revealed. Though the photo beneath the headline was a bit blurry, one could still barely make out Zheng Yaoxian. Though his face was pale, his eyes still shone with determination.
"Zheng Yaoxian was arrested?" Su Ming's voice trembled slightly, and his heart skipped a beat. Even though he had a premonition, he couldn't help but feel shocked when he actually saw the text.
Lin Hao's voice was slightly dry over the communicator: "Yes, the news is confirmed. The reason you lost contact before might be because he was controlled by someone."
"Under control?" Su Ming muttered, his eyes growing serious. He felt himself being dragged deeper into the vortex. Zheng Yaoxian had always been cautious and calm, so how could he have been captured? He had evaded pursuit countless times over the years, relying on his almost preternatural vigilance, and he had never fallen so easily into the hands of the enemy.
"But he hasn't completely lost his ability to resist." Lin Hao continued, his tone still carrying a barely perceptible hint of silence. "There are more details in this newspaper. You have to read it carefully."
Su Ming held his breath and continued to stare at the newspaper, scanning the news word by word. A closer look revealed that Zheng Yaoxian's situation was more complicated than it appeared. While the newspaper briefly mentioned his arrest, it didn't specify how he was arrested or how his injuries were sustained. It seemed as if all this information was deliberately concealed.
But Su Ming was acutely aware of one thing: if Zheng Yaoxian had fallen into the enemy's hands, his life would be in jeopardy. Furthermore, the newspaper's description of him as "critically injured" was a resounding blow to his heart. Zheng Yaoxian's injuries were clearly not as simple as he had imagined, and might even be irreparable.
