Chapter 76 Cyfc
The Canadian Grand Prix is also a long-established Formula 1 race.
In 1967, the Canadian Grand Prix was officially added to the Formula 1 calendar, coinciding with Canada's centennial celebrations.
At the time, the Canadian Grand Prix did not have a fixed venue; instead, it was hosted alternately by the provinces of Ontario and Quebec.
However, both Mosport Park Circuit in Ontario and Montreal-Lamblad Circuit in Quebec eventually withdrew from the race for various reasons.
In 1978, the Canadian Grand Prix was moved to the Montreal Island Circuit, and it has remained there ever since.
The inaugural Canadian Grand Prix, held at the Isle of Our Lady, was won by Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve. That was Villeneuve's first professional victory. No Canadian driver has won the race since.
In May 1982, Gilles Villeneuve was killed in a fatal crash during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. Following the Canadian Grand Prix that year, the circuit was renamed the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit in his honor.
The Canadian Grand Prix was suspended several times for various reasons, but it was eventually successfully reinstated to the F1 calendar.
This year's Canadian Grand Prix is a return after a temporary hiatus—the Canadian Grand Prix was suspended in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, and resumed in 2022.
This year's Canadian Grand Prix features two home drivers, both from Montreal, making it a true home race.
The two drivers are Lance Stroll and Nicolas Latifi.
Montreal local fans: Let's not talk about this anymore, you should continue with your race preview.
Alright, let's get to know the track first.
The Gilles Villeneuve circuit is a semi-permanent street circuit, 4.361km long, with 14 corners and three Drs zones.
This is an extreme "stop-go" track, with long straights followed by low-speed corners, requiring multiple hard braking maneuvers every lap.
The track features a large number of old sausage shoulders, which are the highest among all the shoulders on the calendar.
On this track, you have to ride the kerb to set the fastest lap, but ground effect cars have low chassis and rely heavily on the floor to generate downforce, so riding the kerb will be very challenging.
The Gilles Villeneuve circuit is a narrow track with mostly concrete barriers on both sides and almost no run-off areas, offering little room for error. Any slight mistake by a driver on this track can lead to a crash into the wall, and once a crash occurs, the damage to the car is almost always severe, essentially resulting in retirement from the race.
Especially the outer guardrail of the compound turns 13 and 14, the run-off area is almost zero, and a mistake will result in crashing into the wall. Many F1 champion drivers have crashed into the wall here, hence the name "Champion Wall".
Due to the cancellation of the 20 and 21 races, the track is used as a city road for citizens to pass through on a daily basis. The asphalt surface has been worn extremely smooth by passing pedestrians and vehicles, resulting in very poor initial grip conditions.
The track surface is smoother than ordinary street asphalt, but not as smooth as a professional track, which will create more bumps for the race car.
The race track is located on Isle of Our Lady, which is surrounded by the St. Lawrence River. Not only is the humidity high, but it also has its own local microclimate—large temperature differences between day and night and frequent rain, which always adds a lot of variables to the race.
Coincidentally, Our Lady Island is a habitat for marmots, and a large number of marmots are active around the track. Even though the staff repeatedly cleaned the area before the race, it was inevitable that one or two marmots would suddenly dart onto the track during the race, adding some variables to the tense and exciting competition.
In case you have no idea how much of a variability a groundhog can bring, let me give you an example:
In the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix, Anthony Davidson collided with a marmot during the race, completely destroying his front wing and forcing him to pit for a replacement. Before the collision, Davidson was ranked P3; this forced pit stop caused his position to drop significantly.
They have completely lost hope of winning a podium finish.
Six teams have brought upgrades to this unique track.
Ferrari unveiled a new aerodynamic kit, including a new rear wing, main and auxiliary wings, and other winglets. It's worth noting that this aerodynamic kit is not a special kit for the Canadian Grand Prix, but rather a general-purpose kit.
Mercedes has added airflow cutouts to the front of the blade, strengthened the blade structure, and optimized the steering tie rod angle. These upgrades are primarily aimed at the dolphin jump, and hopefully they will be effective.
McLaren, Alpine, and Aston Martin have all undergone minor aerodynamic upgrades.
Haas has undertaken a massive upgrade, bringing a completely new front wing, floor, and side diffusers. Unlike Ferrari, this Haas upgrade kit is specifically designed for the Gilles Villeneuve circuit.
The Red Bull team did not make any upgrades at this race.
Red Bull does not plan to upgrade on this site.
Alfa Romeo, on the other hand, was preoccupied with previous car stability issues and didn't have the energy to focus on upgrades at this race.
However, Alfa Toli used a third power unit for Tonteau.
The first power unit used by Tancher this season was burned out in the first race. The second power unit was used until the Azerbaijan race without any problems. However, the team decided to switch to a new power unit for stability reasons.
Under current rules, the FIA allows each driver to use three power units free of charge this season; exceeding this limit will result in a penalty and a drop in starting grid position for the race.
Tangcher only has these two power units available, and there are still many matches to come. Tangcher risks being penalized for exceeding the limit.
Leclerc introduced a completely new internal combustion engine, MGU-H, MGU-K, and electronic control system at this station.
The MGU-K is the third system Leclerc has used this season, and the electronic control system is the second. Neither exceeded the limit, so there will be no penalty. However, both are on the edge of exceeding the limit, and there is a high probability that they will be penalized for exceeding the limit later in the season.
The track is just one track, and the cars from each company are all in the same situation. Now please tell me, how should I adjust the car?
You have five minutes to answer the questions. You must remain quiet in the examination room. Do not make noise, whisper, look around, make gestures, use secret signals, bring in unauthorized materials, peek, copy, or intentionally allow others to copy.
As is customary, Kakuta does not start practice on such distinctive tracks.
FP1, Tang Che drives the AT03 onto the track to test the tuning achieved in the simulator.
After nearly half a season of hard work by Tontatta, Gasly, Kakuta, and the team engineers, the simulation work has finally made significant progress. Although the coupling between the simulator and reality is still not ideal, it can provide relatively reliable tuning references for reality.
How reliable is "relatively reliable"?
It's fine if you don't eat the curb, but once you do, the race car immediately bounces and turns into a rocking jelly.
This is where the simulator's coupling with reality is poor—it can never simulate the dolphin jump of a racing car, nor can it simulate the conditions that might trigger the dolphin jump.
Although the kerb is very bouncy, Tancher keeps hitting it. This is necessary work; the team needs to collect data, and Tancher also needs to have a feel for the car under these conditions in order to make targeted adjustments.
Other teams also encountered the same problem, although the severity of the bounce varied.
The Cupping King's racing dolphin jump is only slightly lighter than Baku's.
To test the limits of the W13, Cupping King put on a very aggressive experimental setup, which made his race car very dynamic, especially when going onto the curb.
The bouncing was even worse than in Baku, and the cupping king was even more numb than in Baku: "This car is undriveable!"
But the Cupping King persisted in driving because Mercedes needed data, and the Cupping King also needed to have some understanding of racing.
Looking at it this way, Tang Che and the Cupping King are truly a pair of smiling tigers, two black sharks!
After bouncing around to turn 2, a groundhog suddenly appeared at the apex of the turn.
Upon seeing this, Tang Che was shocked and swerved to avoid it, saying in the TR, "Holy crap, there's a groundhog at turn 2."
"Holy crap!" Tang Che blurted out in Chinese, but "There's a groundhog at Turn 2" was his immediate switch to English.
The event director misheard "Holy crap" as English, and the live broadcast showed the following TR subtitle: "Watchout!"
There "sa groundhog at Turn 2!"
The Chinese-speaking audience exclaimed that they were experts.
During practice session 1, Tang Che focused on adjusting and resolving bounce issues on the kerb, and didn't do much lap time work, ranking P9 on the practice session lap time leaderboard.
Emperor p6, Cupping King p8.
Mercedes fans are relieved.
With the season already halfway through, most Mercedes fans have given up on their illusions and accepted the fact that Mercedes can no longer compete with Red Bull and Ferrari, while also accepting the fact that Toncher is Mercedes' direct competitor.
Mercedes had been dominated by Tontatta for two consecutive tournaments over the entire weekend, but FP1 turned the tables in this tournament. In particular, the cupping king was more powerful and faster than Tontatta. How could Mercedes fans not be overjoyed?
Although most fans know that practice match data is not accurate, they've been frustrated for so long, can't they just enjoy themselves?
A ghost, a ghost called the Iron Buddha Temple, hovers above the heads of Mercedes fans.
In FP2, Tang Che adjusted the car's vibration to a level that did not affect driving.
Gasly, unable to find a direction for tuning in the first practice session, once again borrowed from Tontatta's tuning, barely managing to reduce the car's bounce in FP2 to a level that did not affect driving.
Cupping King's car is still very bouncy, while Emperor's car doesn't bounce as badly as Cupping King's, but it's still one of the best compared to other racing teams.
Both Tontatta and Gasly set lap times in Practice 2. Tontatta's lap time is p4, and Gasly's lap time is p5.
In this practice match, both the top player and the four-time champion were on fire, one at P6 and the other at P7, outperforming the emperor at P8.
The cupping king dropped directly to p14 on the lap time rankings; he's finished.
Leclerc decided to activate the third electronic control system after the second training session.
Current rules allow the free use of two sets of electronic control systems; exceeding this limit will result in a ten-place grid penalty for the start of the race.
Now that exceeding the limits for electronic control is being penalized, exceeding the limits for other components will also result in penalties. Ferrari simply went all out and exceeded the limits to the maximum extent, giving the Leclerc a fourth power unit.
Leclerc was happy to start at the back of the pack.
Those who frequently work as F1 team principals know that before the third practice session for each race, there is a dedicated coffee for the team principal.
Morning.
This is a regular meeting set up by race director Domenicali, but it is not a mandatory meeting; team principals can decide for themselves whether to attend.
At this Saturday's Coffee Morning, Mercedes team leader Toilet Wolf, who is troubled by dolphin jumping, launched an attack during the meeting.
Toilet Wolf: "I've heard all sorts of rumors, everyone's talking about dolphin jumps, the media's hype is off the charts, and people are even emailing each other privately. Let me tell you, you're playing with fire. If any driver crashes because of an overly stiff chassis and keeps bottoming out, you'll all be held responsible, and I will pursue the matter to the end."
Toilet Wolf's statement is clearly an exaggeration, exaggerating the dolphin jump into a major safety issue affecting the entire group and accusing other teams of allowing the problem to exist.
Why would a toilet wolf do this?
Because Mercedes was the only team among the top-tier teams that was suffering from dolphin jumps, only Mercedes needed to raise its floor to alleviate the dolphin jumps. However, raising the floor would result in a loss of downforce. The Toilet Wolf could not accept that only Mercedes would suffer as a result, so he used safety as a pretext to pressure the other teams, trying to force them to carry out mid-season reforms and make everyone suffer.
The English teacher saw right through Toilet Wolf's little tricks and, not wanting to listen to it, said impatiently, "Toto—"
Horner sensed that what was about to happen might be quite dramatic and not suitable for being circulated, so he interrupted the English teacher: "Wait, is anyone recording? I think we should stop recording for now."
Toilet Wolf declared righteously, "I don't care! If you think this is some kind of trick to compete for grades, then let me tell you, you're completely wrong!"
McLaren team principal Seidel was already losing his temper, but Binotto still hadn't figured out the real intentions of the "Toilet Wolf" (Richard Seidel). He thought Seidel was genuinely discussing safety issues and went straight to the related technology: "Ensuring safety is the team's responsibility, including the braking system..."
Suspension system ————
Seeing that the teacher had taken the bait, the toilet wolf immediately followed up: "All of you—if anything goes wrong, all of you will be responsible."
Horner couldn't take it anymore and directly exposed Toilet Wolf's trick: "Change your car, you got a problem, change your fucking car!"
Bonus Chapter: F1 Anecdotes (20)
At 04:51, according to Sky Sports UK, Norris has broken off relations with Sainz.
After the Azerbaijan leg, Sainz, who had been humiliated by his boasting, went to his friend Norris and, in front of Norris, cricketed Taunter.
Norris, who had long been deeply in love with Tomcher, wouldn't tolerate anyone speaking ill of him. He sternly stopped Sainz: "How can you say that about Tomcher? Putting the game aside, aren't you completely without fault?"
Sainz was furious beyond measure, his anger blazing: "How long have I known you? How long have I known you? How could you side with Tang Che without hesitation? We can't be friends anymore!"
Sainz immediately announced that he was severing ties with Norris.
Norris was overjoyed beyond measure, beaming with delight. He immediately messaged Townsend: "I've broken off all ties with Sainz. From now on, I'll only be friends with you!"
Tanger has not yet replied to Norris.
Sky Sports will continue to provide you with coverage.
