Chapter 46 Passing By
Chapter 46 Passing By
The car drove all the way to Arkham Asylum and finally stopped in a secluded corner not far from the back door.
A burly man stepped out of the car with bodyguards, two of whom were carrying heavy black leather suitcases.
A moment later, the back door of Arkham opened, and a doctor in a white coat walked out through the small door.
He was tall and thin, unkempt, with messy brown hair.
Although his face was pale and bloodless, his eyes behind his black-rimmed glasses gleamed coldly in the night.
After the two groups met, they began talking not far from the car.
To avoid alerting them, Batman stealthily approached under the cover of darkness and overheard their conversation.
"The next batch of people will be arranged to come over in three days." Ah Mang's voice was very low. "The boss wants you to handle things quickly and cleanly, and avoid any mistakes."
The doctor gave a cold laugh and did not answer immediately.
Instead, he took the briefcase from the bodyguard, opened it, and found neatly stacked green banknotes inside.
Looking at the entire box of US dollars, the doctor smiled with satisfaction.
"Don't worry, Mr. Amang." The doctor's voice carried an eerie calmness. "My assessments are always professional, and Arkham will take good care of them."
"When exactly will you send over the materials you promised me?"
"Of the three people who came this time, you can use the accountant as you like," Ah Mang said. "As for the other two, the boss still needs them; he needs them to be alive."
"This can't go on forever; you're providing test subjects too slowly."
The doctor was very dissatisfied. "It's much slower than you promised me. This will affect my research. You must speed things up."
Ah Mang seemed oblivious to the doctor's unfriendly tone and nodded slightly.
"Don't worry, Dr. Klein, I guarantee that you'll have enough test subjects in a week at most."
"I hope so."
After exchanging a few polite words, Ah Mang turned around, got into his car, and drove away.
Klein carried the suitcase, a smile on his face.
"Accounting...accounting...nobody's stupid when it comes to studying finance, this person should be a good candidate..."
Klein muttered to himself as he walked back to Arkham. As the back door slowly closed, everything fell silent again, as if nothing had happened.
Batman remained hidden in the shadows, his mind reeling from what had just happened.
Maronny, that bastard, actually colluded with the doctors at Arkham Asylum to help his men escape legal punishment by forging mental health certificates.
The key point is that this guy actually supported Klein's human experimentation in order to help him with his research.
Batman's eyes sharpened as he thought about the despicable acts these guys had committed.
There were some things he hadn't figured out yet, such as how Arkham's doctor could be colluding with Maroni.
Moreover, judging from their conversation, it seems that the two sides have other collaborative projects.
"It seems necessary to inform Gordon and Reeves about this matter. This isn't something that can be resolved by simply taking down a few gangsters."
After several collaborations over this period, Batman has come to regard Levi as a partner, just like Gordon.
When faced with these situations, the first people he thought of were the two of them.
...
Meanwhile, based on clues, Levi deduced that Maroni and Klein might be meeting secretly, so he drove with two officers to Arkham to stake out the location.
The two officers were also old acquaintances: one was Robin, a young man whom Levi had taken a liking to, and the other was Ramirez, who had just returned to work at the police station.
On its way to Arkham, the police car passed a black sedan.
Looking at the black sedan driving from the opposite direction, Li Wei always had a feeling that he had missed something.
"Brother Mang, a police car just drove by..."
Inside the black sedan, a bodyguard reminded Ah Mang.
"I'm not blind, of course I saw it."
Ah Mang didn't even lift his eyelids. "But what does that prove? The police in Gotham."
Although Ah Mang didn't finish his sentence, the mocking smile on his face said it all, and the people in the car burst into laughter.
It just goes to show that Gotham truly lives up to its reputation as a capital of the rule of law; the police do indeed enjoy a very high status.
...
The police cars turned off their lights and parked in a secluded spot on the outskirts of Arkham Asylum.
"Mr. Li Wei, what do we do next?"
Robin turned to Levi in the passenger seat, "Should we get out and keep watch, or stay in the car?"
"Of course we'll get out of the car and stake out the area, bringing surveillance equipment. We need to set all that up."
Li Wei naturally made the arrangements. The madman's area was too large, and the three of them alone could not take care of everything. They could only rely on technological means.
As for the option of the three people splitting up to wait, that option never even appeared in Li Wei's dictionary.
If the three of them are separated and something happens, it's practically handing the other person a free meal.
You might even get caught by the scarecrow and become their experimental subject.
Levi led Robin and Ramirez out of the car. Robin opened the trunk and took out the equipment that Levi had prepared in advance.
Just as the three were about to set up surveillance, a seductive black figure suddenly emerged from the shadows by the roadside.
Li Wei was stunned as he looked at the catwoman, who was wearing a tight black leather outfit and a black cat-shaped mask that only revealed her lively eyes and beautifully shaped chin.
"Catwoman, what are you doing here?"
In Li Wei's mind, Catwoman wasn't a bad person, but she wouldn't be so bored as to play the role of sneaking into Arkham at night.
Catwoman leaned against a lamppost, arms crossed, a hint of mockery in her eyes.
"Mr. Prophet, investigating a case so late at night, aren't you afraid of being swallowed by the shadow of Gotham?"
Sensing the concern in Catwoman's words, Li Wei's tone softened unconsciously.
"It's my duty. You, on the other hand, shouldn't get involved in things you shouldn't be involved in."
Under the wary gazes of Robin and Ramirez, Catwoman chuckled and smiled at Levi.
"Just a heads-up, things aren't safe around Arkham," Catwoman said, turning and disappearing into the roadside bushes. "You're destined to leave empty-handed tonight; the person you're looking for has already left."
After saying this, Catwoman turned and left without offering any explanation.
As the catwoman's sexy and alluring figure disappeared into the darkness, Li Wei knew that the catwoman had come to warn him.
He didn't know why Catwoman was on the outskirts of Arkham, or what her reasons were, but he believed what she said.
It seems I did miss something; it was probably that black sedan that passed by us.
"Mr. Levi, shall we continue setting up the equipment?"
Seeing that Li Wei was lost in thought, Robin whispered a reminder to him.
"There's no need. It seems we're a step too late and have probably missed something important."
After saying this, Li Wei turned around and was met with the cold-blooded Batman.
"Dude, can you stop appearing and disappearing like this? It's really scary."
"Okay, buddy, I'll be more careful next time."
Levi's complaint froze Batman's cold expression, followed by a hint of embarrassment. "But I hope you can understand, after all, Batman is used to the solitude of the night."
Li Wei didn't react much to Batman's words.
Robin, who was carrying various equipment behind him, looked at Batman with a burning gaze, her eyes filled with fanaticism.
